چکیده

We develop a mathematical model for the spreading of a thin volatile liquid droplet on a uniformly heated surface. The model accounts for the effects of surface tension, evaporation, thermocapillarity, gravity and disjoining pressure for both perfectly wetting and partially wetting liquids. Previous studies of non-isothermal spreading did not include the effects of disjoining pressure and therefore had to address the difficult issue of imposing proper boundary conditions at the contact line where the droplet surface touches the heated substrate. We avoid this difficulty by taking advantage of the fact that dry areas on the heated solid surface are typically covered by a microscopic adsorbed film where the disjoining pressure suppresses evaporation. We use a lubrication-type approach to derive a single partial differential equation capable of describing both the time-dependent macroscopic shape of the droplet and the microscopic adsorbed film; the contact line is then defined as the transition region between the two. In the framework of this model we find that both evaporation and thermocapillary stresses act to prevent surface-tension-driven spreading. Apparent contact angle, defined by the maximum interfacial slope in the contact-line region, decays in time as a droplet evaporates, but the rate of decay is different from that predicted in earlier studies of evaporating droplets. We attribute the difference to nonlinear coupling between different physical effects contributing to the value of the contact angle; previous studies used a linear superposition of these effects. We also discuss comparison of our results with experimental data available in the literature.

Instabilities of Thin Viscous Liquid Film Flowing down a Uniformly Heated Inclined Plane

Instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. The heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. Thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. Moreover, the heat transfer at the free su...

Effect of Pressure on Bubble Growth Within Liquid Droplets at the Superheat Limit

A study of high-pressure bubble growth within liquid droplets heated to their limits of superheat is reported. Droplets of an organic liquid (n-octane) were heated in an immiscible nonvolatile field liquid (glycerine) until they began to boil. High-speed cine photography was used for recording the qualitative aspects of boiling intensity and for obtaining some basic bubble growth data which hav...

Morphological Changes of Small Viscous Droplets under Spreading

– Dynamics of spreading of viscous non volatile fluid droplets on surfaces is modelled using a solid on solid model, which is studied with Monte Carlo simulations. Tendency for dynamical layering and surface attraction are in part embedded into the effective dynamics of the model. This allows a description of the spreading process with a single parameter, which strongly influences the morpholog...

Initial spreading kinetics of high-viscosity droplets on anisotropic surfaces.

Liquid droplets on chemically patterned surfaces consisting of alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic stripes exhibit an elongated shape. To assess the dynamics during droplet formation, we present experimental results on the spreading of glycerol droplets on such surfaces using a high-speed camera. Two spreading regimes are observed. Initially, in what is referred to as the inertial regime, t...

Thermocapillary-driven motion of a sessile drop: effect of non-monotonic dependence of surface tension on temperature.

We study the thermocapillary-driven spreading of a droplet on a nonuniformly heated substrate for fluids associated with a non-monotonic dependence of the surface tension on temperature. We use lubrication theory to derive an evolution equation for the interface that accounts for capillarity and thermocapillarity. The contact line singularity is relieved by using a slip model and a Cox-Voinov r...
